Yoga for Therapists

Yoga for Therapists: Trauma-Informed Yoga for Therapists and Their Clients

This training includes three 2-hour sessions exploring foundational concepts and techniques for integrating yoga into psychotherapy. Each session weaves together practical skills and philosophical insights, emphasizing trauma-informed approaches to embodiment, breath, and belonging. Yoga is presented as a powerful complement to trauma-informed care and can be particularly beneficial when integrated into EMDR treatment. Participants will practice and learn to lead three gentle yoga sequences, three yogic breathing techniques, and three grounding tools for use in clinical sessions or as therapist self-care. The material supports all phases of trauma treatment and is appropriate for both seasoned yoga practitioners and clinicians new to movement-based work.

Participants will be able to:

  • Define the Sanskrit terms Yoga, Asana, Ahimsa, Swadhyaya, Atman, Prana, and Pranayama, and describe how each term applies to trauma therapy and EMDR.
  • Identify effective timing for introducing yoga techniques during history taking, resourcing/stabilization, trauma processing, and integration phases. These relate to EMDR Phases: history (Phase 1), resourcing/stabilization (Phase 2), trauma processing (Phases 3–6), and integration (Phases 7–8).
  • Address trauma-related challenges (e.g., dissociation, emotional flooding, negative beliefs) using yoga-based tools including external grounding, non-judgmental awareness, and self-compassion.
  • Lead three brief trauma-sensitive yoga sequences incorporating gentle movement, breath awareness, and grounding for either client use or clinician self-regulation.
  • Apply yoga techniques to enhance therapist presence, self-regulation, and vicarious resilience.
  • Integrate foundational yoga principles into clinical work to promote co-regulation, rapport, and embodied healing.
